Joann Rechtine, CPDT-KA, MS, MPH, RN, CPC, Certified International Dog Trainer
The opening of The Loose Leash Academy is the culmination of a both career and calling for Joann. It brings together her passion, talent and years of experience in two of her favorite arenas; educating those around her and spending time with dogs.
As a child, Joann was the best friend of all of the animals in the neighborhood. Unable to convince her family to get a dog of their own proved to be only a minor stumbling block. As a child, she had the neighborhood dogs calling at her house each day for her to come out and play. At age 19 she got her first dog, and she has had one (or two, or three) ever since.
As a nurse and nurse practitioner, Joann found that she excels at educating and training people. She loves to see people have that “aha moment” when all of the concepts and hard work come together. In her career, she progressed from patient care, to management, to running continuing education programs for medical professionals. Throughout her career in nursing, Joann always kept a toe dipped in the water of dog training. Over the past 16 years, it has become more of a passion and she has studied endlessly to learn about canine behavior, and the human-canine bonds and interactions while teaching dog training classes and seminars.
Joann is one of twelve US based dog trainers who are graduates of the Turid Rugaas training program. This international certification is reserved for dog trainers specializing in dog behavior and problem solving. This focus provides a mechanism for dogs and owners to have a better life together by promoting compassionate and caring dog care, and better understanding of the dog’s behavior and why problems arise.
Joann has been a therapy dog handler for the past 9 years, and has volunteered hundreds of hours with her own dogs. Active in local therapy dog chapters, she has worked tirelessly to mentor new teams and prepare teams for their evaluations. Additionally, Joann served on the board of a rescue organization that placed companion animals with Veterans while living in Rochester, NY. She is an evaluator for the AKC Canine Good Citizen program and a professional member and sits on the Education Committee of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. She is also a member of the Pet Professional Guild and Pet Dog Trainers of Europe.
